What is so great about all these overcomplicated, uncomfortable, completely random, nonsensical designs A friend of mine was playing a guilty gear game the other day on PS4. Japanese Characters Showing Up As Boxes Arch Generator Of SomeTo me, these characters looked like they were created using a random generator of some sort. Like, it brings up 4 or 5 different random objects and then the artist has to make a costume based on all these objects. I just cant understand how else these people come up with these designs and costumes. They look stupid. Now, im not saying there havent been excellent designs from Japan devs. Im mostly talking about Jrpgs and the whole cosplay movement (including anime). Those Evas look amazing and even the uniforms or any NERV equipment looks amazing. It makes sense i guess because they are otherworldly entities. Problem is that i see more of the Angels design philosophy everywhere rather than the Evas. Even Jim Sterling made a video about this I know that im the minority here and i will get some hate. Im probably in the minority.but I feel like at least the anime stuff is normal in-universe. American comic characters wear costumes that are ridiculous as a disguise outfit or even when their identity being a secret doesnt matter such ad the xmen. No reason for Wolverine to still be dress ing in that yellow get up. I find anime-style character designs in general to be an eyesore. Daisuke Ishiwatari can make some amazing designs though, so you lost me on the Guilty Gear comments. Ever watched Japanese TV Time, weather, subtitles, facecam, and more Its too much. In the end though, the artists that strike a balance between being unique and toning down the bells and whistles are the ones that make good stuff. I dont mean that like theyre too deep for you to understand, maaaan, but rather they have a lot of little bits and pieces.
